P(caps)eople living around Bilpela, Silimboma, an extension of the Bilpela Area in Tamale, Ghana, would be very familiar with a goat named Neymar. Around 2014 to 2015, from nowhere, a very unusual goat appeared in the neighborhood. All of a sudden, people started calling it Neymar.

This goat was neither male nor female. It had no genitalia to determine its gender. No udders, no testicles, not even the normal features of a male goat. The reason I know more about Neymar is because it roamed with our male goat. They were the best of friends, and Neymar often followed our goat into our compound.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: how did it excrete or mate? Nobody knows. Even though Neymar ate and drank, no one ever saw it urinating or defecating. The goat was very black, with a body structure similar to female goats in the area, but it had no genitalia. Despite looking like a female, it roamed with our house’s male goat, chasing after females and making noise everywhere.

Another surprising thing about Neymar was its social life. At night, when people gathered at the roadside to watch movies on TV, Neymar would come around too. Strangely enough, no one chased it away. They allowed it to watch like everyone else.

Rumors spread that some young men once caught Neymar and sent it to the Gumaa Naa’s Palace. But because of its unusual nature, they were ordered to release it. Some even joked that Neymar’s favorite food was jollof rice, though that part was likely an exaggeration.

Eventually, Neymar disappeared without a trace. To this day, no one knows its whereabouts. The black goat named Neymar remains an unsolved mystery in Bilpela, a story that still sparks curiosity and laughter whenever it is told.
