DSP Abdul Jalil Bawa has officially stepped down as the head of the "Black Maria" task force, and honestly, people are pretty worried about it. While his team mourns the loss of a commander they viewed as a protective father figure and a fearless bulwark against the drug trade, a significant portion of the public sees his resignation as a non-negotiable win for accountability following the fallout from the Ibrahim Mahama incident. It’s a messy, deeply human dilemma: how do we honor the service of a man who dedicated his life to order while ensuring that the weight of justice remains equal for everyone, regardless of their status? As the dust settles in Tamale, we aren't just looking at a change in leadership; we’re watching a community grapple with whether it’s possible to maintain a hard line on crime without crossing the line on human rights.
In the security world and across the Northern Region, his exit is a huge deal. On one side, his team is devastated. Chief Inspector Gamba basically said the unit feels lost without him, describing Jalil as less of a boss and more of a father figure who kept everyone disciplined and focused.
On the street, though, the mood is a lot more complicated. A lot of people feel this had to happen after that messy run-in with Ibrahim Mahama during Eid in Tamale.
