Kuwait’s Oil Tanker Damaged in Iranian Strike at Dubai Port

O(caps)n March 31, 2026, the Kuwaiti oil tanker Al Salmi was struck in what was described as an Iranian drone attack while at Dubai Port. The vessel was fully loaded with two million barrels of crude oil, ready to be moved to Qingdao, China, when it immediately caught fire. Emergency crews in Dubai responded quickly, and the fire was extinguished before it could spread further. Despite the incident's criticality, all 24 members onboard were reported safe, with no injuries sustained.

The attack caused significant damage to the tanker’s hull, raising fears of a potential oil spill in the Gulf waters. Authorities have been closely monitoring the situation to ensure that no leakage occurs, as such an event could have catastrophic environmental consequences. For now, officials have confirmed that no oil has spilled, but the risk remains high given the amount of the cargo onboard.

This strike did not occur in isolation. It was part of a wider escalation across the Gulf region, with several countries reporting related incidents around the same period. Saudi Arabia intercepted eight ballistic missiles, though six houses were damaged in the process. In Dubai’s Al Badaa area, four people suffered minor injuries from another attack. Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain also reported strikes, adding to the mass tensions in the region since last month.

The situation remains tense but controlled. The Kuwaiti tanker Al Salmi suffered damage and a fire after the reported Iranian drone strike, yet no crew members were harmed, and no oil spill has been confirmed. Authorities in Dubai quickly brought the fire under control, though the risk of further escalation in the Gulf is clear. With several countries reporting related attacks in the same period, the incident underscores both the fragility of maritime security in the region and the potential impact on global energy markets. For now, the focus is on assessing the damage to the vessel and ensuring the surrounding waters remain safe.
