T(caps)he recent strike on the Port of Primorsk is being described by maritime and security analysts as a “center‑of‑mass” hit against Russia’s energy export logistics. The attack has drawn widespread attention for its scale, precision, and timing, coinciding with broader global energy tensions.
On March 22, Ukraine’s General Staff and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) confirmed a coordinated long‑range operation involving dozens of drones. Russia claimed to have intercepted 249 drones nationwide. Still, independent reports from Astra and Radio Free Europe (RFE/RL), supported by satellite imagery, confirmed that at least four large fuel reservoirs at the Primorsk terminal were set ablaze.
According to Reuters, all oil‑loading operations at Primorsk, which typically handles more than one million barrels per day, were suspended on the evening of March 22 and remained halted into the following day. This operational shutdown represents a significant disruption to Russia’s export capacity.
The strike was not limited to Primorsk. A secondary target, the Bashneft‑Ufaneftekhim refinery in Ufa, was also hit. As reported by The Kyiv Independent, this facility has a processing capacity of up to eight million tons annually and serves as a primary fuel source for the Russian military.
Evidence from multiple outlets underscores the scale of the attack. RFE/RL provided satellite imagery showing four burning tanks, contrasting with Russia’s official claim of only one. Kyiv Post highlighted the port’s role in Russia’s “shadow fleet” and the disruption to Urals crude logistics. Meanwhile, NASA FIRMS satellite fire‑tracking data confirmed thermal anomalies across the entire tank farm area at Primorsk.
The timing of the strike is particularly significant. As Al Jazeera noted, it coincides with energy shocks caused by escalating Iran‑US tensions in the Middle East. By hitting Primorsk and Ust‑Luga, both key export hubs, Ukraine has effectively squeezed Russia’s western oil route at the same moment the eastern route through the Strait of Hormuz faces instability.
